Description
The animal shelter has been working since 2001 with the aim of protecting, caring for and finding homes for about 500 abandoned animals in the entire region of Medjimurje County.
Our wish is to encourage people to reconsider their relationship and join us in the fulfillment of our goals.
Considering the fact that every animal has rights, and that there are people who are ruthlessly violating them, we felt the urgent need and try to tackle the existing problems of animals. Through its activities, animal shelter is trying to eliminate the prevalent narrow-mindedness and citizens limited awareness on the issue of animals, and find homes for as many abandoned and deserted animals as possible. One of the main goals of our shelter is the education of citizens about animal rights. A large number of abandoned animals is an indication of lack of moral maturity in individual citizens. This problem cannot rest only at the expense of our shelter, it is a problem of the whole society in which we live, and no one should turn a blind eye on this.Types of help and learning opportunities

Čakovec is located in northern Croatia, in the border triangle Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia. It is the largest town in Međimurje region. This is the area between the rivers Mur and Drava, which is known for its vineyards and agriculture. There is a museum in Cakovec, an old fortress, a library, a theater, a swimming pool as well as numerous bars / restaurants / discos, where you can relax . But is more a quiet small town in rural surroundings.
Help
We are looking for more volunteers to assist with their every day care, as well as larger building and cleaning projects.
Every day care includes cleaning of the boxes (arranging/changing bedding, picking up faeces, washing the floors and changing water), as well as feeding and walking the dogs. It is very important that you are a responsible person who is willing to follow the rules of the shelter strictly, as these have been put in place for the safety of our dogs and volunteers.
In terms of our larger projects at the shelter, it would be beneficial, albeit not necessary, if you have skills in welding, usage of grass trimmers and chainsaws, and painting walls. Other handyman skills are also highly welcome. Naturally, should you have no experience of such things, we are happy to teach you the fundamentals.Languages spoken

We can offer a separate house for the volunteers with four beds, kitchen, bathroom and WC.
What else ...
In the immediate vicinity is Varaždin, (only 14 km southwest of Čakovec). The city offers many cultural and historical monuments and is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape. The historic center of this pronounced Central European baroque city is very well preserved. Main attractions are the city center and the castle. Numerous museums, galleries and collections as well as the listed city cemetery are particularly attractive destinations. Of course there are also nightlife options, bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
Especially in summer, Varazdin and Čakovec are the venue of many cultural events, summer festivals. On the river Drava it can be nice to walk, a swimming pool / river pool has recently been opened.
The capital Zagreb which is also the largest city of Croatia is about 90 km away from Cakovec. Zagreb is really worth a trip, because there are many sights to experience.
Zagreb has an airport for arrivals, from where you can then take either the train or the bus to Cakovec. Generally you have good connections by train and bus to get around within Croatia.

And it seems like it was meant to be, that it didnt work out the years before that I travelled around. The work is not really work but it… read more
