    Description

I run a bed and breakfast, and a petting farm (lambs) on the westernmost tip of the Dingle Peninsula in Co. Kerry, Ireland, situated on the coast, on the Wild Atlantic Way. We look out over the ocean, and are at the foot of Mount Eagle. The walking trail, the Dingle Way, runs right behind our farm. There are several 'beehive huts' (ancient dwelling places, about 1000 years old) on the farm. Although English is our first language, the area is a Gaeltacht, where the Irish language is also spoken, and I speak that too. Our visitors come from all over the world, and come to enjoy the scenery, and the peace of a countryside location. We have several dogs, which work with our sheep, as we also farm sheep here. The area is very popular with artists of all kinds, who get inspiration from the beauty of our surroundings. Just looking out the window can often take your breath away!

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We are English speakers, so certainly there will be plenty of opportunity to practice English. This will also be your chance to learn a few words of the Irish (Gaelic) language, and learn about the rich culture of the area. We overlook the Blasket Islands, and a visit to the Island (in season) would be a good experience in your time off. There are many walking trails on the Dingle Peninsula, including one running behind the farm. The area is rich in archaeological remains, from prehistoric times to the medieval period. One of my relations is an archaeologist, so you can learn from her! Dingle town and the surrounding area is a very popular tourist destination, for many reasons, including the great traditional music to be heard in the local pubs and at concerts, as well as many other cultural activities (depending on the time of year you are here). will give you a flavour of the area. Should you wish it, you will be offered to help work with the sheep, and you can learn about the challenges and fun of sheep farming!

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Although we are situated on a road that can be busy during the daytime in the summer, we don't actually have any public transport passing. The nearest bus stop is 6km away, but we can provide bicycles. The nearest pubs (and shop) are 6/7km from here, and Dingle town is 13km distant. This is a great area for walking, and we have wonderful sandy beaches (although some are not so safe for swimming). There are plenty of watersports here as well. I was a ship's officer for several years, but now have returned to working on our family farm. My parents live nearby, and other family members are not too far away. This is a good place to spend time if you are happy with your own company, and the peace and tranquility of a seaside, country location.
