  Description

  This is a community located in Huanchaco, La Libertad, Peru, an underdeveloped town with significant economic needs and a lack of basic infrastructure such as drinking water, sewage systems, and garbage collection. This NGO seeks to harness the waves of Huanchaco, a world-renowned surfing reserve, to transform the future of the children of Cerrito de la Virgen through educational surfing, empowerment, values ​​education, and sport, breaking down economic barriers across the ocean.
  
  The project began in November 2021 when Brayan Hilario, a young athlete born in Cerrito de la Virgen, saw surfing as an opportunity to help children in his community who lacked access to the sport and the ocean. With the support of a partner, he co-founded the surf school to offer completely free lessons. The project started with just three children and, during its four years of operation, has grown to include 120 children today, transforming lives through educational surfing and empowering the children of Cerrito de la Virgen. The sea is our school, surfing our tool, educating and empowering on a board. Take Jhonatan, for example, who joined the foundation at age 10, overweight and afraid of the sea. Thanks to the foundation, he not only overcame his fears and improved his physical condition, but he also became a great surfer and is now a teacher and volunteer, sharing his knowledge with the children of his community.
  
  Also featured is the story of 16-year-old Adrián Ruiz Peña. His life captured public attention after he became a driving force for social change through his involvement with the NGO. His story of personal growth was captured in the short film "LIBERTAD" (Freedom). He went from being a minor beneficiary of the NGO's program to acting as an instructor for the children of his community, promoting surfing as an escape from vulnerability.
  
  Furthermore, we have formed a team of young people who compete in local and national surfing championships in the Under-12 Girls' (Andrea Carranza) and Under-12 Boys' (José Briceño) categories, where we have won several trophies and medals. Our goal is to have a World Champion representing Cerrito de la Virgen. We have been raising funds by selling raffle tickets and project t-shirts, and also receiving help from each volunteer through social media and websites; however, this is not enough. To fulfill our mission, we need help to face the next waves.
  
  Este es una comunidad ubicada en Huanchaco, La Libertad, Perú, un pueblo subdesarrollado con importantes necesidades económicas y falta de infraestructura básica como agua potable, alcantarillado y recolección de basura. Esta ONG busca aprovechar las olas de Huanchaco, una reserva mundial de surf, para transformar el futuro de los niños de Cerrito de la Virgen mediante el surf educativo, el empoderamiento, la transmisión de valores y el deporte, derribando barreras económicas a través del océano.
  
  El proyecto comenzó en noviembre de 2021 cuando Brayan Hilario, un joven atleta nacido en Cerrito de la Virgen, vio en el surf una oportunidad para ayudar a los niños de su comunidad que no tenían acceso a este deporte ni al océano. Con el apoyo de un socio, cofundó la Escuela para ofrecer clases totalmente gratuitas. El proyecto comenzó con solo 3 niños y, durante sus 4 años de funcionamiento, ha crecido hasta incluir a 120 niños en la actualidad, transformando vidas a través del surf educativo y empoderando a los niños de Cerrito de la Virgen. El mar es nuestra escuela, el surf nuestra herramienta, educando y empoderando sobre una tabla. Tomemos como ejemplo a Jhonatan, quien se unió a la fundación a los 10 años, con sobrepeso y miedo al mar. Gracias a la fundación, no solo superó sus miedos y mejoró su condición física, sino que también se convirtió en un gran surfista y ahora es profesor y voluntario, compartiendo sus conocimientos con los niños de su comunidad.
  
  También se presenta la historia de Adrián Ruiz Peña, de 16 años. Su vida captó la atención pública tras convertirse en protagonista de un cambio social gracias a su participación en la ONG. Su historia de crecimiento personal quedó plasmada en el cortometraje "LIBERTAD". Pasó de ser un beneficiario menor del programa de la ONG a actuar como instructor para los niños de su comunidad, promoviendo el surf como una vía de escape de la vulnerabilidad.
  
  Además, hemos formado un equipo de jóvenes que compiten en campeonatos locales y nacionales de surf en las categorías Sub-12 Femenina (Andrea Carranza) y Sub-12 Masculina (José Briceño), donde hemos ganado varios trofeos y medallas. Nuestro objetivo es tener un Campeón Mundial que represente a Cerrito de la Virgen. Hemos estado recaudando fondos mediante la venta de boletos de rifa y camisetas del proyecto, y también recibiendo ayuda de cada voluntario a través de redes sociales y sitios web; sin embargo, esto no es suficiente. Para cumplir nuestra misión, necesitamos ayuda para afrontar las próximas olas.

  You will learn about the workings of a small NGO. This provides volunteers with more responsibilities and more flexibility in their role. We can tailor your experience based on your interests and what you want to do! Volunteering with us means taking on a wide range of opportunities to be creative, as you can bring your own ideas to the table.
  
  There is the opportunity to improve your spanish! Particularly among the kids, very little English is spoken but there is no better way to learn than being thrown into it. There are also practical skills to be learned. We have ambitious plans to improve the academy, with plans for more building work. We have just constructed a private bathroom in the school and a raised platform in the garden to carry out other activities.
  
  Living in Huanchaco and working in Cerrito will provide a truly unique international experience and the ability to immerse yourself in the local culture. You will be working in a team of dedicated and passionate individuals who are really trying to make a difference. Working with kids from disadvantaged backgrounds is always an enriching and rewarding experience, particularly when our organisation is aimed at improving mental and physical wellbeing through group discussion and physical activity.   Our volunteer house is located in Cerrito La Virgen – Huanchaco, a small, quiet, and safe town, ideal for those seeking a relaxed and community-oriented environment. The house is located on the road to the surf school, allowing you to participate in daily activities.
  
  Room layout:
  
  1 double room: private space with one bed and bathroom. Average cost.
  
  3 shared rooms:
  Equipped with two functional bunk beds per room, total capacity for 4 volunteers. These rooms share a bathroom, kitchen, living and dining room, laundry patio, and garden. These spaces are located within the volunteer house. We also have bicycles available, perfect for getting around the area and easily reaching the beach or the town center.
  
  The house is just 10 minutes from Huanchaco beach, in a residential area of ​​Cerrito de la Virgen, a coastal town renowned for its surf culture and very popular with national and international tourists. In Huanchaco you'll find everything you need: markets, restaurants, cafes, transportation, and a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.
  We have a surf school in Huanchaco where you can take lessons and rent boards and equipment if you're interested in learning to surf.

  equipadas con 2 camarotes funcionales por habitacion ,capacidad total para 4 voluntarios ,con baño compartido y cocina, sala y comedor, patio de lavanderia y jardin estos espacios son dentro de la casa de voluntarios, Además, contamos con bicicletas disponibles, perfectas para movilizarse por la zona y llegar fácilmente a la playa o al centro del pueblo.
  
  La casa se encuentra a solo 10 minutos de la playa de Huanchaco, una residencial en cerrito de la virgen, ciudad costera reconocida por su cultura del surf y muy popular entre turistas nacionales e internacionales. En Huanchaco podrás encontrar todo lo necesario: mercados, restaurantes, cafés, transporte y un ambiente vibrante y acogedor.
  Contamos con una escuela surf en Huanchaco y puedes tomar clases y alquilar las tablas y equipo si te interesa aprender a surfear.

  What else ...

  Huanchaco is an amazing place to stay for a while. The waves are perfect year-round and ideal for both beginner and expert surfers. Since the town is a World Surfing Reserve, there's a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere in Huanchaco. Many Peruvian and international tourists and backpackers come to Huanchaco, which means the people are really friendly and welcoming. There's also a range of traditional and international cuisine available, with many cafes and restaurants in town. The local food is incredible, with fresh ceviche available on every corner. Local fishermen still use their traditional reed boats, called caballitos de totora, to catch fresh fish every day.
  
  For activities outside of Huanchaco, there are opportunities for hiking in the nearby mountains. Huanchaco is a surf town, and as such, there are frequent excursions to other famous spots on the northern Peruvian coast, such as Chicama, Lobitos, and Máncora. For example, Chicama is known for having the longest left-hand wave in the world and is about 45 minutes from Huanchaco. For cultural activities, the capital of the Chimú civilization, Chan Chan, is just 10 minutes from Huanchaco and is the largest pre-Columbian city in the Americas. Trujillo is also only 25 minutes from Huanchaco. Trujillo is the third largest city in Peru, a beautiful city with colorful buildings and lovely colonial-era churches. If you'd like to travel further afield during your free time, there are regular buses to stunning Andean cities like Cajamarca and Huaraz.
