Kia Ora!
We are a friendly young couple (both 29) from New Zealand looking to explore and experience different cultures worldwide. We are currently embarking on a year-long trip around the world and hope to use Workaway to meet new people and learn some new skills along the way!

My name is Jayden and I grew up on a dairy farm in rural New Zealand so have experience in farm work, as well as working as a chef for 10 years so I am super interested in all things food! My partner Claudia, loves meeting new people, adores children and animals and she is on a mission to make as many friends as possible on our trip. Claudia also has experience in marketing, social media and is pretty handy with power tools and loves to learn more DIY skills, being an amateur she renovating her own 100-year-old home in Wellington! We look forward to meeting with you :)

As well as positive attitudes and a willingness to learn, we both are keen to learn about growing fruit, vegetables and herbs and using them to cook. We stayed with Ozgar for just shy of two weeks and found him personable and passionate about rural farm-life.

So, getting to the farm was not too much of a hassle from Istanbul. It's a 10-minute drive from Gelenbe, but you can't walk there as it's over the motorway. Luckily, Ozgar was cool with giving us rides, which saved us some trouble. We… read more took a bus from Istanbul (500TL each), which was straightforward, and with Ozgar's directions, we got dropped off right at the farm.

The weather was much colder than expected, but we were prepared. Even though it didn't rain much, we bundled up. The house had a fire/oven range going, which was nice.

Our days followed a loose routine. Breakfast at 8 am, helping out to prep brekkie with Memet, Ozgar's dad, then tackling farm tasks until lunch around 2 pm (sometimes later 3pm). As for the work, we often started picking various vegetables, peas, beans or strawberries were in season during our trip. Our other jobs were hoeing and mulching the 100+ orchard for the first few days. Other work included prepping the land for planting, moving rocks, weeding while Ozgar drove the tractor to prep for us to put the seeds down! We also built a new fence for the goats made from up-recycled goods (think tent polls and rocks).

After eating Radia's cooking for lunch, we'd chill for a bit, usually around 1-2 hours with a book since there's no WiFi. We read about 5 books during our stay so make sure to pack your own (we also left a book each to start a library for other workawayer's). Dinner was another communal meal made by Radia, and we'd end the night with Malisa tea and cuddles with the cute 2 week-old kittens.

As for accommodations, the workawayer bedroom had four couch-style beds, like a hostel. The bathroom setup was basic. It could get crowded when there are more volunteers around.

On our days off, Ozgar arranged a trip to a nearby town for 50 euros each. We opted for Pamukkale, which was beautiful, but the drive was long 3Hrs there and back. Ozgar packed us a picnic for breakfast and lunch, which was thoughtful. Our other day off was spent chilling on the farm, we walked around the very small township a few times soaking in nature, read, and made delicious sarma with Radia - one of my highlights.

Ozgar, Memet and Radia are kind people and we were told on the first few days that after 3 nights you're no longer guests, but apart of the family - we felt this way by the end.
