  • Description

Hello!! My name is Dongyi, I am from Taiwan. I just graduated from high school in Taiwan this year. After graduation, I joined a program held by the Taiwanese Government. This program is to let high school graduates make a plan by themselves and have a gap year in other countries. And I choose to come to Australia to learn English and experience the culture, I plan to stay in Australia for one year. After Australia, I will go to Finland to volunteer in a local school to teach some students English and Mandarin and also play with them.

More details about my language interests
Currently, I possess proficiency in three languages: Chinese, Taiwanese, and English language, which I am actively learning. I have a strong interest in learning English, and it is one of the reasons why I came to Australia. In Taiwan, the emphasis in schools is primarily on reading and writing, with comparatively less focus on developing oral communication skills. Therefore, after graduating from high school, I decided to come to Australia, hoping to enhance my speaking through exposure to a real language environment.

    1. Photography:
I am a travel and event photographer. I started photography in high school. Since then, I have continued to specialize in travel and street photography. However, recently, I had the opportunity to take on projects involving birthday parties and Halloween party photography. This has broadened my photography skills, allowing me to comprehensively document various events.

    2. Baking:
My mom and dad have a strong passion for baking, so they have integrated their love into their work, dedicating themselves to the bread-related industry. From my childhood to now, my parents often experiment with various new baking recipes at home, and I always enthusiastically join in, allowing me to learn a wealth of valuable baking knowledge.
During this process, I've tried making various baked goods such as toast, French bread, soft cookies, macarons, and more. Through hands-on experiences with my parents, I've not only learned how to create delicious treats but also cultivated a deep love and skill for baking.

    3. CultivatING different vegetables and fruits:
During my time in Taiwan, my grandmother owned a piece of land used for cultivating various plants, including fruits, vegetables, and herbs. Because of her ownership of this land, whenever she had free time, she would take me there and personally teach me how to cultivate different vegetables and fruits.

    4. Languages:
Currently, I possess proficiency in three languages: Chinese, Taiwanese, and English, which I am actively learning.

    5. Psychology:
I have always held a strong interest in psychology because through studying psychology, I can gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between emotions and interpersonal interactions. During high school, I had the opportunity to serve as the class counselor and continued in that role for three years. Throughout this period, I experienced many fulfilling moments. Whenever I saw someone improve and feel better after counseling, it brought me great joy. This sense of achievement deepened my understanding of the value of psychology.

    6. Passionate about exploration:
In Taiwan, most students immediately enter university upon graduating from high school, even if they haven't decided on a specific major. In contrast, I chose to take a two-year Gap Year, which is relatively uncommon in Taiwan. The primary reason for this decision is to learn English and, at the same time, confirm the academic field I want to specialize in. As mentioned earlier, I have a strong interest in psychology and aspire to become an English teacher. Therefore, during this Gap Year, I plan to thoroughly contemplate and clarify my career direction.
I anticipate spending one year in Australia and then heading to Finland in August 2024 for an international volunteer opportunity. I will be teaching Chinese and English at a local elementary school while accompanying the children in creating wonderful memories. This unique experience will contribute to a deeper understanding of my interests and future career direction.

    7. Passionate about learning:
I am extremely passionate about learning new things. Whenever I develop an interest in a particular field, I proactively go to the library or search for relevant videos and online courses. Taking photography as an example, my photography skills are entirely acquired through reading books and watching related videos on YouTube. Additionally, as I mentioned before, Taiwanese schools do not emphasize the cultivation of English-speaking skills. Therefore, before coming to Australia, I primarily self-taught English by watching videos on YouTube and series on Netflix, and I achieved quite satisfactory results.
