  • Description

Hi I'm Juan from South Africa !

I've just finished my degree in Mechanical Engineering and have decided on taking a gap year to explore the world and take some time to decide between doing masters or starting work.

I love the ocean and nature in general. My hobbies include surfing, fishing, hiking, working-out, reading and making music. I'm a huge animal lover, especially dogs :)

My plan is to escape from social media and explore the world first hand; make international friendships, learn new skills and make some awesome memories !

  • More details about your skills

As an engineering graduate I believe my best skill is that of problem solving, however as far as real world experience goes:

Whilst studying I worked a total of 2 months for an engineering firm (Innovative Industries) during holidays doing design work, conducting tender processes, going on site visits and meeting with clients/stakeholders.

I'm a qualified lifeguard and worked as one during COVID 2020 when universities were closed.

I've worked as a musician doing gigs for birthday parties (18th's and 21st's), as well as for university events for Campuskey Stellenbosch.

    Skills learnt via university:

As part of mechanical engineering we had to complete a module called "Practical Workshop Training" which entailed working with lathes, milling machines, drill presses, rivet guns, bending and rolling metal and welding.

For my thesis, I designed two testing rigs to tensile test solar panel assemblies. As such, I gained valuable experience in designing and fabricating mild steel assemblies. As well as assembling solar panel solar tracker assemblies. Although the solar panels I worked with are used for utility scale solar tracker arrays, my knowledge can be applied to household solar PV mechanical installation.

Also general skills learnt during undergrad would be coding in C and MATLAB. Proficiency in MS Projects, Autodesk Inventor Pro, LaTeX, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Powerpoint.

Skills learnt via extra curriculum activities:

As far as music goes I can teach beginner guitar and piano lessons.

I've been surfing since I was 11 (13 years) and have been teaching surfing lessons since 2020.

I have grown up with dogs, especially big dogs (boxers, boerboels, staffies). And have experience with them whether it be going for walks, bathing them, clipping toenails etc.

With regards to social media, I have my own music brand, as such I have experience in content creation with proficiency in CANVA and Final Cut Pro.
