Description
We are looking for help with developing our little homestead in New Brunswick. We left our busy lives and careers behind in April 2022 for a 5 month Canadian vanlife adventure, that somehow took a detour. We fell in love with the idea of leaving our jobs and home and creating a new life on a homestead that we build ourselves.
We bought 6.5 acres of forest land near Miramichi in August 2022 and quickly got down to business clearing some of the land and constructing our new home, a tiny cottage among some of the most beautiful big pine trees we’ve ever seen. We would love some help! We spent some time as workawayers ourselves, and now we are enjoying hosting.
We have a small loft sleeping area in our cottage where workawayers stay. Please note that our cottage is very open and the only room with walls is the bathroom! We also have lots of room on the property to host vans, and we can provide power and water hook up. We also have 2 super friendly large dogs, Guinness, a standard poodle, and Oscar, an Aussidoodle.
We are heating with wood from our land, and we are working towards being as self-sustainable as we can, creating gardens, greenhouse, cold cellar and raising meat animals. This is an adventure for us, and we both love sharing it and meeting cool people along the way. We will provide family style meals, and love to have visitors share kitchen duties with us.Types of help and learning opportunities
Help with Eco ProjectsGardeningDIY and building projectsCreating/ Cooking family mealsHelp around the houseCultural exchange and learning opportunities
We can share things about our culture from growing up and raising our family in Newfoundland, including music and food. We can share our recent life changing experience of making decisions that brought us from Newfoundland and transplanted us in New Brunswick to start a new, more self sustainable life. We can share our experiences with leaving our home and high stress careers with great pay cheques that afforded us some nice luxuries in life, to attempting to find a new way to exist that is slower, more in harmony with nature, more self-reliant, less stressful and more full of joy.
Help
The projects that we will need help with start with finishing touches inside our cottage. We also need help with landscaping, creating gardens for veggies, clearing walking trails around the property, and building a sauna and outdoor oven area. We would also like help with meal prep and clean up. We also hope that travellers will share stories, share meals, and learn from us as we learn from you. In exchange for meals and lodgings, we are looking for about 4-5 hours per day, 5 days per week. We are pretty laid back and don’t have a set schedule. We will take lots of time to relax and hopefully share lots of laughs, stories and good times.

We offer a cozy loft bedroom in our cottage that has a low ceiling, ladder access and open to the living space below, with a curtain for privacy. We will provide a bed and bedding. Shared meal times in the cottage, and bathroom facilities of course. The cottage has a wood stove for heat supplemented with electric. We have hot and cold running water, and fully equipped kitchen and bathroom. The inside is still a work in progress, but it’s super cozy.
What else ...
We are in a rural farm community about a 5 minute drive from Miramichi which has a great small city feel, with lots of amenities. The people here are great, super friendly. Our neighbors are friendly, many have small hobby farms with some farm animals. We have a vehicle, so we could pick you up or bring you to Miramichi if needed.
