I stayed with Keith for two months (mar-may). I only have positive things to say about my stay.
From the beginning Keith was very nice and welcoming, I really appreciated that. Keith took me to several places all along the Island, karta river wildernis and memorial beach for example. The nature here is amazing, felt like living in a documentary!

On clear nights you can sometimes see the northern lights and they were amazing, super cool to experience. The work was not overbearing at all, wood splitting was so much fun. I stayed at Keith's Floathouse throughout February and it was an adventure. Due to the time of year, there unfortunately wasn't too much to do, though Keith still taught me some things-- such as crabbing and shrimping. The work was fair and not overbearing. Besides shrimping and crabbing, I spent time moving things around the Floathouse and

Keith is a very welcoming host with a variety of countless stories to tell. The views on the Floathouse were beyond beautiful and I always looked forward to waking up to the scenic views. Keith makes sure you are well fed and warm and the accommodation is generous. Keith has great wifi that I was able to fix up.
The journey to Keith's is quite the adventure. You will have to fly into the Ketchikan airport and take the inter island Alaskan ferry from Ketchikan to Hollis. Keith will pick you up from there. I recommend you buy the tickets in advance.

What can I say that has not already been said. I stayed with Keith and Taya for 5 weeks in October - November 2022. They are both wonderful hosts, and more importantly, wonderful people. … read more trip to this remote location was an adventurous one for sure. The location is truly out in the middle of nowhere so if you are looking to get away from everything this is the best. This is exactly what I was looking for and I will treasure my time I spent there. The float house was awesome and it's in the most beautiful location. I saw plenty of wildlife, including bears, deer, otters, seals, minks, eagles, and whales, all while sitting at the house. It's amazing.
My work time was very fair. Most of the time I did not even consider it as working because we were doing things that are essential to live a self sustainable lifestyle. Keith was very patient and loves to share his knowledge of how he lives this lifestyle.

Keith’s floathouse is a pretty nice retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Work wasn’t too difficult. We did shingles, deck building, light carpentry, and firewood. Keith taught me how to do all of these things and was very patient with me. Taya and I talked a lot about our shared christian faith and jewish heritage which was nice. She

Very good lessons to take with me on my journey and some that proved very helpful at my next and current workaway. In the off time, I got to sea kayak around freely, and there are some beautiful places around, especially around where my buddy Sam, the other workawayer who was with me, was camping. Keith can show you where that is. I made a stick hut by there too. Advice for future workawayers, make sure you’re orderly, Taya will appreciate it a lot. The effects of this experience will last a lifetime.
I decided to leave the big city and change my lifestyle for a bit this summer. A quick message and a short phone call was all it took to convince myself that this was the place to be. I had little idea of what to expect when I arrived but the transition I made was very smooth due to Keith's
… read more excellent hosting skills. For two months I lived with Keith. Talk about having a room with a view! The sliding window I had in my room gave me access to one of the best views I have ever come across. I was able to find peace and calm very easily here.
I helped Keith tackle a few projects around the house, fixing the deck and staining the wood, learning about different tools and how to use them efficiently (city kid here) as well as larger projects such as getting a humongous empty fuel tank off of the shore and under the floathouse for buoyancy. Man did that take some power and good logistics to get done, but by the time it was laying under the house it was very rewarding! We worked hard but we also relaxed, Keith is a very relaxed guy and I enjoyed talking to him and listening to all of the stories he had to tell. we became movie critics and rockstars on our free time. I got to meet a few of his friends who were all friendly and interesting people and I learned a bit about the people in S.E. Alaska as well. We did our fair share or crabbing, shrimping and even a bit of fishing too. it was an amazing place to be, when work was done you can easily slip into the forest and hike around a bit as well as take the kayak out and explore for as long as your arms can paddle!
I saw wildlife every single day. Bears on the beach, otters in front of my room, fish jumping out of the water, eagles soaring before my eyes. "look outside, there is always something to see" I was extremely lucky to see wolves at one point and even a couple of whales. Keith's enthusiasm for this location and the beauty available here was contagious. You can tell that he is a person who truly appreciates his surroundings and all that they have to offer. We also ate like kings, he may not say so but he was quite the cook as well. I could go on and on about this amazing experience but I will keep some of this to myself.
Next time we meet we will have to finish recording the album. Thank you for this opportunity and I hope to see you again whether it be here or anywhere in the world.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

SIMPLY INCREDIBLE!
When I decided to embark on my journey to Alaska, discover and feel on my skin the local lifestyle, I would never have imagined such a great experience.
Keith is an incredible host and a really kind and open minded person. I felt home and welcome since the first day of my 6 weeks I spent on his float house. I had my own bed and
… read more he provided me everything I needed, making me feel comfortable in every moment. The float house is located in a remote bay In Hollis, Prince of Wales Island, South-East Alaska. Literally surrounded by nature, animals and tranquillity, this place is perfect for everyone who has such passions. I could enjoy my morning coffee watching at bears and eagles looking for food on the beach, or simply enjoying the view of several seals fishing next to the float house. Animals, lots and lots of animals, can be easily seen everyday like you see dogs in a big city!
I was looking for a place where to experience the true alaskan lifestyle, and Keith's place turned out to be the perfect one. The main tasks and activities during the day consist on take care of the house (a float house requires often maintenance, like replace wooden boards on the deck or renew the house sidings), take care of the boats/skiffs and, most important thing, prepare and set crab and shrimp pots! The different kind of fishing provided us fresh fish and shellfish every day, straight from the sea! Roughly once a week we went to the closest town (15 minutes by boat and 20/30 by truck) for supplies, gas/propane and groceries. Despite the remote location of the float house, and the fact that is a float house, Keith's built and provided it with every comfort of a normal house, like an inside bathroom, a shower, running water, etc., but also maintaining a rustic and adventurous style.
Keith is a great person, funny and open to teach and show you new things. He brought me on several boat excursions, fishing trips, hiking areas, etc... Get bored here is impossible, guarantee! He's also super friendly and play cards or weird alaskan games with him was daily part of our life! In exchange for my help on taking care of the float house, some woodworks and a really few house chores he opened me his heart and showed me every single aspect of the true alaskan life, and more! I would suggest this location and this man's hospitality at whoever loves the nature, the animals and the adventurous life!
Of course, depending on the time of year, whales and orcas can be spotted on the ocean, and the incredible Aurora Borealis as well! I could describe how stunning the sky at night it was but I'm not going to ruin the surprise at the other workawayers ;)
It was an incredible experience that filled my thirst, without doubt. Every day something cool and adventurous happened, making me say "Another crazy day in South-East Alaska!"
Thank you very much Keith and thank you very much Taya (Keith's wife that I met for only a couple of weeks) for your incredible hospitality and all you gave to me, this was, and it will be, one of my most incredible and amazing experience of my entire life! I'll be back one day, promise!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

What a stunning place !
Keith lives in a remote Alaskan bay on a beautiful floating house, he re-build himself (with sometimes the help of workawayers). The house is big (you will have your own room) and confortable (hot water, toilets, kitchen, well, everything you need ! -but the wifi is moody in remote alaska-)
The jobs we had mainly were :
… read more building (cut some wood, sand it, build the deck with it), help with fish and crab (pull the crab pots, reload them). The cooking and cleaning were shared and always delicious.
The nature around is beautiful (black bears, seals, eagles, mink, deers, loons and other birds on a daily basis), if you are lucky : whales, porpoises, orca.
The water is clean for swimming and paddling (but cold ! be brave !)
Keith goes to town with his little boat once a week to buy groceries and fuel. You will be able to find there all you need (food, pharmacy, post office, good wifi).
Keith is a kind and gentle man, he has many stories to tell about : cars (he was a mechanic), politic, american and especially alaskan lifestyle, nature and fishing, fish cooking and alaskan culture.
The only hard time we had was communicating with Keith sometimes. We would no understand each other clearly, (what to do, when, how and why) and it could make it more difficult to be efficient. But if you have a very good english, make an effort and always speak with a open heart, I am sure you will make it easier.
I would DEFINITELY recommend this workaway if :
-you have an interest for woodwork
-you have an interest in nature, animals, stars (good star watching !)
-you are not a city-person and you don't mind not having good wifi for a while
-you love seafood
-you want to practise wildlife photography (best place on earth - really !)
-you want to experience remote lifestyle
I would not recommend it if :
-you need to see many people every day (it is very isolated)
-you get bored easily (get a good book - or games, Keith loves to play Go and cards)
-you are not outdoorsy
-you are not open-minded - you cannot accept other peoples point of view (Beautiful Remote Alaska is tough, and so are its inhabitants, sometimes with strong opinions)
Thanks again for the stayVous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

WHAT A PLACE!
i stayed for nearly three months (Aug-Nov) at Keiths place and i loved every minute! For nature and wildlife lovers this is the place to go, very remote and peaceful and i believe its hard to understand this type of life unless you experience it. It is so rough and pure but simple the same time, always special.
Keith is a very
… read more generous, calm and funny person and he made me feel like home from the second i arrived. I had a beautiful spacious room upstairs with my own balcony where i enjoyed my coffe in the morning and sometimes northern lights at night! I saw bears the first months every day, lots of birds and ducks, deer, otters and seals. ALSO humpback whales and a killer whale!!
I the free time Keith took me out for hikes (27 bears in one day at karta river!!), by boat out of the bay to find whales and in the end he even joined me on a short trip by ferry to Juneau where we hiked to a Glacier (not sure if he wants to do that again haha)
the work was very appropriate, we finished a few projects on the house or went outside to cut firewood, some cleaning and cooking and mostly fishing or pulling pots. for me it was more fun than work actually! Dungeness crab and shrimps as much as we could eat, cooking was always fun. I could use a Kayak any time i want to explore the coast, i collected berries and mushrooms, explored a bit by myself.
I will never forget this fantastic time i had in alaska and i will sure be back one day! Again, a huge THANK YOU keith, you tought me a lot about life and living. And how to play crib ;) big hugs!!
